Artists

Alexey Brodovitch, Bela Borsodi, the collective Colagene, David Carson, Frank Tjepkema, Julien Vallée, Maki, Michal Batory, Michel Bouvet, Stefan Sagmeister, Yulia Brodskaya, The New York Times Style Magazine, FUTU Magazine, are artists and issues that inspire me and who gave me the urge to design a digital magazine where typography has a crucial role to play.

I like the way these artists play and mix images and text. The written part is always in relation with the image. Every letter is essential to compose a good image and to pull through a message. They do not hesitate to change the rules in typography.

By example, Herb Luballin, graphic designer and typographer inspires me in how to mix images and typography. Herb expressed his sensitivity through images and stunning layouts that he was committing. Whether it was for advertising or publishing, Herb was still the right tone and offbeat ton his work.

Target Audience

- one magazine targeted for children (first target)
- one magazine targeted for audience between 18 to 23 years old (second target)
- one magazine targeted for adults (24 to 30 years old) (third target)

For children, I will create something simple, attractive to tell them a story. I will use a graphic style “Tactile Design”, with for example using papers, or assembling objects to create a letter. (to play with interactivity power to tell a mini story.)

For the target between 18 to 23 years old, I will use colourful graphics and especially in a digital lifestyle. I will play with geometric forms and things like that. (Playing with speed of interactivity to captivate the eyes of teenagers.)

For the target between 24 to 30 years old, I will create a retro design. Playing with an atmosphere of shadows and light. I want to stay in a simple style while remaining contemporary. I will play less about interactivity for adults. Let’s still legible.

Tactile design

The world «tactile design» means leaving aside photoshop and other programs of the Adobe suite. Carvings, stickings, assemblages, and especially the imagination and a lot of patience.

Ideas: The title emerges gradually with graphic style “Touch design” using objects in stop motion. For general text, the text will appear gradually.
2. A character as a letter-man carries a panel where you can see the text through holes in the cardboard. For the first target, there will have letters transformed in characters. I still doubt using paper or using objects. For the second target, I will create a city on legos looking like letters of the word “tactile design”.

Quote

Magazine typography is all about communicating, but magazines communicate in many different ways. One of those ways is through the text, the traditional meat of any publication. Other ways include photography, artwork, suggestive and allusive headlines, cartoons, and even the advertising. All of these require integrating words and images in imaginative ways. (Berry, J. D., 2001)

Overview of my project

My project is to create a digital magazine where typography has a leading role. You must target the customer as much by images as typography. That is why I want to know how typography can interact with people’s emotions. The target for the magazine will be people not in the design world, not professional in this environment.
This magazine would aim to discover the design through typography. The main point of this magazine is that it will be available in three different magazines: one targeted for children, one for teenagers and one for adults. The typography will be in a specific style for each volume of the magazine. By targeting different types of audience in my magazine (children, teenagers and adults), I can study what kind of information is important to know to attract people’s attention. But especially how to play a psychological role through typography. I like when the typography is part of the picture and when they use it to underline emotion or sensibility of subject. I will discover by statistics the interest of one form or another to trigger some emotion from a person. In this digital magazine, typography will be attractive, I want people see more typography as an image in the magazine.

Light Painting

Light painting, also known as light drawing or light graffiti is a photographic technique in which exposures are made usually at night or in a darkened room by moving a hand-held light source or by moving the camera.

For light painting, I have to play with light. By that way, I like the idea of using a real object with the mixed pattern of light from the light painting. For the second and third target audience, I think the draw bursts of sounds of a radio that turn into letters. For the first target, I will recreate the atmosphere of night with the stars and the moon.

IDEAS: 1. The text appeared with a projector. Shadows move. Light (via the mouse) can illuminate the text. 2. To explain the concept of day and night by the light, creating light that decreases and increases. A clock will run according to the light. 3. A person draws with a light source and wrote letters. This little clip will be made in stop-motion.

Success in Art

If you want to reach your goals as an artist, it’s important to know what ‘success’ means to you. For many people, success is about earning a living with art… and only art. For others, it’s fame. Yet others want to achieve a certain level of skill. For the topic “Success in art”, I just want to stage this sentence making sense due to the shape of typefaces.
